Sinterklaas is coming to town!

Every year Sinterklaas comes to the Netherlands to celebrate his birthday on 5 December. Sinterklaas (Sinterklaas is not the same as Santa Claus) is a special celebration for children only. The children will get, just like with Santa Claus, presents on Sinterklaas birthday. Sinterklaas lives in Spain and typically arrives 3 or 4 weeks before his birthday.  Last Saturday, we went to Delft Centrum to celebrate Sinterklaas arrival.

Vlaggetjesdag is a tradition in the village of  Scheveningen to welcome the new and fresh herring. All around Holland the newly caught herring will be available for consumption. On the picture you can see Santhy eating a herring the Dutch way.

queensday

On April 30 we celebrated my first Queen’s Day as a citizin in the Netherlands. This is the first time for Joshua celebrated the Queen’s Day too. He enjoyed it. This is a very special day in The Netherlands. Everybody has a day off from work as it is a national holiday. Originally the day is on the birthday of the ruling King or Queen. The current Queen, Queen Beatrix, changed this and did not change the date of Queen’s Day as a tribute to here mother. As such the date is still April 30, the birth date of Juliana, mother of Beatrix. This was good idea anyway because Beatrix’s birthday is in January.

There are many celebrations all over the Netherlands and many people will wear orange clothes. Furthermore it is a tradition that the weather is sunny and warm. This year was no exception.

However, this year this very special day was brutally ended by a one man attack on the Royal family during their visit to the city of Apeldoorn. The Royal family was not hurt, but 6 people died, including the crazy man. I hope this is not the end of this great Dutch tradition.

sinterklaas

Sinterklaas is coming to town! In The Netherlands every year on December 5, they will celebrate Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas is not the same as Santa Claus and a special celebration for children. In December 2007 we enjoyed it with my parents in law but this year 2008, only with my mother in law. See Sinterklaas pictures.
